Tour of Masserie Amodio

Another Great Outcome

The walking tours of Martina Franca, Grottaglie and a few other places were out due to injury so we got busy and found yet another activity that didn’t require too much walking. We found a tour of the Masserie Amodio along with some hands-on opportunties. There are many masserie in Apulia that have been converted to agriturisimo. We’ve stayed at several in Italy and have enjoyed each one; they all are unique. But this time we were headed a bit north to tour a working farm without the “turisimo” side.

The drive from Ostuni to Motola, where the farm in located, was interesting and allowed us to see areas we didn’t plan on seeing. The farm produces their own meat, dairy products and bread. They sell these on site as well as other local products. I think they may have a point of sale in Taranto as well.

Cheese Makers

These cheesemakers were not only kind and friendly but were happy to share the cheese making process with us…although all in Italian. Thank goodness I can speak well enough to translate…for the most part.

Meeting The Milk Producers And Friends

This is a family run business and our tour was run by the daughter. She said that 3 generations live on site and most work on the farm in some fashion. After the cheese production area we went out to visit a few of the real farm producers and their nearby friends.

Tarelli Making

Finally my favorite part; making tarelli. We worked with one of the staff to make tarelli. Our instruction was fun and provided yet another opportunity for me to perfect my Italian translation skills. We ended up with more tarelli and we made ourselves and had a feast on them for days. We also met the nonna (grandmother) of the farm who came out to greet us and join in on the tarelli making.

Wine Production

Before leaving and while the tarelli were baking we went out into the wine fields to learn about the production here on the farm . But some people paid more attention to the dog….go figure.

A Stop Alongside The Road On The Way Back to Ostuni

We saw this abandoned trulli further down the road and couldn’t help ourselves.

All in all our flexibility to was leading us to new adventures. It could have been a sad memory but we were having a grand time!
